How a Gazetter Can Help Your Research

"Gazetteer" is an unfamiliar word to most researchers, but it can be a huge help in your research.
Columbia Gazetteer
Also known as "geographical encyclopedia," a gazetteer provides detailed information about a place. This includes current and former names, the boundaries, major geographical features, and more.

Why would you want to use a Gazetteer? Often our ancestors' places of birth, death, or marriage have changed names since they lived there. A gazetteer can help ensure that you're looking in the right place. It can also provide important hints about their way of life in that location, including why they choose to fish or farm, and what crops they might have grown.

How do you access a gazetteer? Library members have access to the Columbia Gazetteer through Godfrey Scholar. To get there, go to http://www.godfrey.org, click on "Godfrey Scholar+" and log in. Then click on "Maps" and "Columbia Gazetteer."

Happy hunting!

Searching Godfrey Scholar just got easier!

Searching for a Smith or Brown ancestor?

Searching in Godfrey Scholar just got easier.

Thanks to recent updates, you can add a year or range of years to your name search.

If you know the exact year, enter in the box next to "year."

Need to search a ten year period? Imagine you want to search for someone who died between 1880 and 1890.  Enter 1885 in the year box. Change the zero to five. The search will now include any results dating from five years in either direction.

No more having to read through results too old or too recent to be your ancestor!

19th Century U.S. Newspapers had a New Look!

19th Century U.S. Newspaper, one of our most extensive and well used databases has updated their website!  As its name suggests, 19th Century U.S. Newspapers is a massive repository of newspapers from all areas of the United States from the 19th century.  All of these newspapers are completely searchable.  And the new website makes searching easier!

The main page contains a single search field.  There are options to search newspaper text or keywords associated with the articles and to limit your search by date of publication.  We recommend navigating to the Advanced Search page for more options.

On the Advanced Search page you can search for multiple terms at once by adding each new term into a search field.  As on the main page you can limit the search by date of publication.  You can also limit the search by article type (obituaries, news articles, business news, etc.), location, and publication title.  You can either type the publication title or location you wish to search into the search field or browse the available titles and locations in the 19th Century U.S. Newspapers database.  A new option is the ability to turn on Fuzzy Search, which searches the database for words with a similar spelling to your search terms, allowing you to see spelling variations or possible misspellings of the search term.

From the search results page you can narrow down your results by article type and date of publication.  You can also search for a new term within the results of the original.

We've updated our instructions on using 19th Century U.S. Newspapers to reflect the changes.  These instructions can be viewed under the Helpful Guides area of the Newspapers category on the Godfrey Scholar.

If you are interested in checking out 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, it is available in our digital library to Premium level Godfrey Scholars.  Sign up online or over the phone to become a Godfrey Scholar today!

This Week on the Scholar

From author's to politicians, the subjects of this week's new biographies are four incredible men from the history of the United States!

The Genius and Character of Emerson was the first book published by the Concord School of Philosophy recording a collection of nearly all the lectures in their complete form from one of their semester long courses.  The course, like the book, was titled "The Genius and Character of Emerson", and focuses on precisely that.  Lecture topics range from Emerson's relation to various places and people to how different cultures view his work.  A fascinating read for anyone interested in learning more about the great author.  The collection was edited by F. B. Sanborn.

Speaking of F.B. Sanborn, we finally fixed the errors from the original scanning of the first volume of his autobiography and added it to to Scholar!  Franklin Benjamin Sanborn was an author and a member of the Transcendentalist movement.  His two volume autobiography gives insight not only into his history, but also the changing path of his life's philosophy and opinions.

Everyone knows Theodore Roosevelt the rough rider 26th president of the United States.  But did you know, before he was president he owned a successful cattle ranch? Roosevelt in the Bad Lands chronicles the years of Roosevelt's life he spent in the Bad Lands, first as a four eyed tenderfoot who was the butt of everyone's jokes then later as a respected ranch owner who worked just as hard as any cowboy in his employ.

Finally we have the biography of William Pinkney.  Pinkney, born in Maryland in 1764, had a long and illustrious career.  He held many positions of importance in his life, including Mayor of Annapolis, Attorney General of Maryland, a Major in the War of 1812, Congressman, Senator, and. U.S. Minister to Russia.  The book was written by his nephew, the Rev. William Pinkney, D.D.

This Week on the Scholar

Thank you everyone for bearing with us while routine server maintenance delayed our regular uploads.  This week marks the last batch of books uploaded from our backlog!  In this final large batch of new books there is a nice variety of biographies, genealogies, church records, funeral records, and even a few military books.  Indexes for two new cemeteries and one volume of funeral home records were also added.

We will continue to add new content to the Scholar, though not at quite the same volume as before.  Our goal is to focus on adding unique content from our collection that cannot be found anywhere else, such as the variety of handwritten records and portions of Fremont Rider's original collection.  If you know of something at the Godfrey you would like to see on the Scholar please let us know!

This Week on the Scholar

It has been another great week for adding content to the Scholar!  This will most likely be the last large installment of new genealogies and biographies added to the Scholar from our current backlog.  There will certainly still be more, but they will be interspersed with a little more variety as well.  Next week you can look forward to a set of history books from Iowa as well as much more!

We are also very pleased to announce that the Midwife Records of Sebastiana Misenti from Middletown and Ansonia Connecticut have been completely indexed!  These indexes are available on the Scholar and the records are now completely searchable searchable!  Sebastiana was the go to midwife for Italian immigrants from Mellili Italy who lived in Middletown and Ansonia Connecticut.  If you have Italian ancestors from the area they are well worth a look!

Please Consider Donating to the Godfrey's Annual Fund

It's fall.  Here in New England, that means getting out the winter clothes, bringing in the plants, stacking the firewood.  Some of us carry on the tradition of canning and putting up preserves.

As I go through this yearly ritual, I am reminded of going with my grandmother to check on her root cellar, a climate controlled, secure space filled with squash, pumpkins and other root vegetables.  It was like discovering treasure.  All winter long these vegetables would stay fresh because they were chosen and cared for in a special way.

It occurs to me that in many ways Godfrey is like a giant "root cellar" filled with books and documents, containing treasured information, preserved to help genealogists find their roots.
A lot of time, effort and money goes into maintaining the library and our prized collection.  Our work now requires increased technology expertise and equipment as we continue to make materials available to our remote patrons.  We are especially proud of how much we added to our Godfrey Scholar online access this year. (see below for a list)

Please consider making a gift to the Godfrey Annual Fund.  We receive no public funding.  We thrive on the day to day efforts of our volunteers and donations from patrons like you.  Your contribution goes directly to the care and maintenance of the library and our collection.

-Beth Mariotti, Executive Director

New Church Records Indexed!

The indexing of the Groton, Voluntown, Sterling, and Waterford Church records book is finally complete!  This book is a treasure trove of information from the Congregational Churches in all four towns between the years of 1720 to 1839.

These records include admissions:

815 Baptisms
419 from the Groton First Congregational Church
396 from the Voluntown and Sterling First Congregational Church

978 Admissions
436 from the Groton First Congregational Church
347 from the Voluntown and Sterling First Congregational Church
      188 from a Waterford Church

And 245 Marriages from the Voluntown and Sterling First Congregational Churchs

For a total of 2038 unique entries that cannot be found anywhere else!

A large portion of the admissions records also include the method by which the admitted may have left the church: most often by death or generic removal (changing churches, moving away from the area, etc.), and, in the case of Wealthy Nooka from the Voluntown and Sterling First Congregational Church, excommunication.  For those church members who died a date of death is always given along with their date of admission to the congregation.  A brief timeline of several pastor's careers is also included in the records: when they were instated, when they retired, and when they died.

Best of all, with these indexes we were able to make the original record book completely searchable!  If you have family from the Groton, Voluntown, Sterling, and Waterford area definitely make checking out these records a top priority!

Last Week on the Scholar

Last week we added all sorts of incredible works to the Scholar.  Among the searchable books added are state and local histories, genealogies, biographies, and vital records from several Connecticut town.  We also added two record books from the Cromwell First Congregational Church and two sets of funeral home records, the first from New Britain's B.C. Porter Furniture Dealer and Undertake and the second from Middletown's Coughlin-Lastrina Funeral Home.  The two funeral home records are high priority on our list of records to index, so these records will hopefully be searchable very soon!

We are having problems with the Godfrey Scholar

We would like to apologize for the inconvenience.  Due to an unfortunate accident some data was erased from the Scholar's main page.  An older version of the data was uploaded so the format has also reverted to a previous state.  All content is still present on the Scholar and can be found via navigation in the viewer itself, but links to content on the Scholar's main area are currently missing.

We are working to correct this as quickly as possible and thank you for your patience.
